3 Things You Need To Know Before Going To The Gun Store For The First Time

As an American citizen, you have the right to own a gun. If you have decided it is time to purchase your first gun, there are a few things you should understand about the gun buying process before you step into a gun store to purchase your first firearm.

Thing #1: Small Gun Isn't Always the Best

When it comes to purchasing a gun, keep in mind that buying the smallest gun you can find is not always the best. Pocket pistols are generally the smallest gun sold in gun stores. The truth is that pocket pistols may be small, but they are also hard to control and hard to practice with.

When it comes to purchasing a gun, you want to purchase a gun that you can comfortably hold in your hand and control. That doesn't have to be a huge gun, nor does it have to be the smallest gun.

Thing #2: Purchasing a Gun Takes Time

If you want to purchase a gun for the first time and you don't have a valid concealed carry permit yet, it is going to take some time for your purchase to go through.

When you purchase a gun from a registered firearms dealer, they are going to have to run a background check on you before the sale is complete. The length of time it takes for the background check can vary; sometimes, it can be completed almost instantly, and other times, it can take a few hours or a few days.

You need to plan for the processing time of a background check when you purchase a gun for the first time.

Thing #3: A Concealed Carry Permit Is Needed to Carry the Gun

Third, if you want to carry a concealed gun on your person, such as against your body with a holster or in your purse, you need to get a concealed carry permit.

A concealed carry permit will require you to take classes and train on firearm safety in order to obtain the permit. You will also have to pass an extensive background check. You can't just walk out of the gun store and holster your new firearm to your side under your clothing; you need to obtain a permit in order to carry your firearm in that way.

If you want to purchase a gun for the first time, be aware that a background check will be run before you are able to purchase the firearm you select. When you select a firearm, keep in mind that the smallest firearm is not the best. You want a firearm you can comfortably carry and practice with, and you will need a concealed carry permit if you want to carry the gun on you in a hidden manner.
